We had a lot of people through here this weekend. In addition to wonderfully attended worship services, an estimated 250-300 cars drove through our LIVE NATIVITY. Nancy and I drove through twice. It was a heartwarming experience that we’ll want to grow in years to come. And the sanctuary was almost full for the Pathfinders/Goodfellows Christmas concert on Saturday evening. I’m thankful St. Andrew’s can participate in such a worthwhile charitable event.

My Worst Christmas Song Survey yielded some surprising results. Lots of people said they LIKED the Beach Boys’ Christmas songs, including Little Saint Nick. Goodness Gracious. Far and away, the leader in Worst Song category was Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer—a song with a pretty good guitar hook. Other songs on the list:

THREE ITEMS FROM MANDY BARKHAUS:

Live Nativity Many thanks to all of you who helped setup, prepare hot cocoa & cookies, be part of the ‘cast’, and the cleanup crew. This was a great event, which is sure to be an annual St. Andrew’s tradition. I think we had about 250 cars go through the Nativity scene and dozens of cookies and cups of cocoa were served. Thank you!

Kirk and Kristen Brumbaugh are the latest new members to join the church. Kirk is a lawyer with Brumbaugh and Quandahl and Kristen is director of marketing at SEI. They have two Jordan-1 and Taylor-4 months old and was baptized this weekend.

Christmas Eve Need for Ushers If you are planning on attending one of the Christmas Eve candlelight services, please consider helping out by being an usher. Our service times are 3, 5, and 7. FOOD DRIVE REPORT:
Hi All, This is Reporter Chadder again. This week has had me hopping from branch to branch of the Pearl Tree. The branches were so full that Jim and Lynda Alvarez once again have taken a load to the food pantry. You will also notice some new ornaments added to the tree. In an interview with Bob Davis, youth director here at the church, I was told that the youth who’s names you see on the ornaments, all donated money to be sent to the food pantry. Again thank you to all the children who brought in food as their birthday gift to Jesus on Sunday. What nice kids you have here at your church! Today’s load to the food pantry was impressive; here is the run down of what was taken:

Lord God, I thank you for a wonderful weekend of Christmastide celebration.
I am so excited about Christmas Eve. I’ll confess to being little worried about the weather reports, but then the first Christmas Eve didn’t line up exactly like Joseph and Mary planned, either. We’ll make do, as they did. Some of our readers will be traveling out of town this week. See them safely to and from their destinations. As for me, there’s nowhere in the world I’d rather be on Christmas Eve than St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Amen.

Reflections on Psalm 139, God born in Human Form, the visions of Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque, and an Auction To Remember. Complete with free defibrillator instruction. Also titled: If You’re Going To Have A Medical Emergency, It’s Good To Have It Among Methodists.
The Bells will be with us on Sunday. We will share the sacrament of Holy Communion in each of the services.
Wear Red on Saturday Night in support of the Huskers. There will be plenty of time to worship, grab a bite and catch the game at 7:00.
The monthly Communion offering will go to support the Missouri River District Hispanic Ministry, also known as Esperanza de Vida, led by Rev. Patricia Gandarilla.

After the 10:00 Service on Sunday, we will mosey over to Champion’s Run Country Club to finish the Auction portion of the Dinner/Dance/Auction. You don’t need a ticket. Food and beverage will be provided.

FROM CHILDREN’S DIRECTOR NETTA POLLOCK:
Annual Intergenerational Christmas Cantata: A Sunday of Celebration
Again the children will be performing with the adults/youth for our Annual Cantata. A practice for children is on Dec. 12 at 10:00. Preschool-PreKindergarten meet in the Sanctuary. They will practice first and then be dismissed. Parents please stay with your children. Kind-5th will meet in the Family Life center and can be picked up at 11:00 in the Sanctuary. Children are also practicing in their classrooms during Sunday School.

Performances for children on Dec. 13 during the 10:00 service only. Children will be performing with the adults/youth during the Cantata. The Cantata will be preformed at all three services, however the children will perform only at the 10:00 Sunday Service. A “Happy Birthday Celebration” is planned after the service in the Family Life Center. Be sure to plan on eating pancakes provided by the youth too!

Don’t forget to bring your non-perishable food items to place in the “tree” in the rotunda. All donations will go to our local Pearl United Methodist Food Bank.

The Pearl Pantry Christmas Tree even has its own reporter, so let’s hear from…. Hi All, this is Chadder the Chipmunk, reporting from the Pearl Pantry Christmas Tree in St. Andrew’s Rotunda. I have been checking out the branches of the tree and see there is still plenty of room for more food donations. I would really like to see the tree packed to overflowing before Christmas, so I will be giving you reports as to how it is going thru Pastor Bruce’s a-mails. Parents please tell you children to be looking for me among the branches of the Pearl Tree and if they would like to bring a can of food to join the rest, I will be there to thank them. The Advent Conspiracy: Can Christmas Still Change the World?
The story of Christ's birth is a story of promise, hope, and a revolutionary love. So, what happened? What was once a time to celebrate the birth of a savior has somehow turned into a season of stress, traffic jams, and shopping lists. In celebrating Christmas in the way of the story Christ followers are taught how to worship fully, spend less, give more and love all this Christmas and every Christmas. Join the Adult Sunday School class for this Advent Study that will begin Dec. 6 at 11:15.

December Book Club
The group will meet on December 14th for a potluck at Jeff and Ginny Hatcher's at 6:00 p.m. Bring side dishes or a dessert. We are going to do something special for this month's selection. Purchase a Children's book of your choice. Be prepared to give a brief summary of the book. We will then donate them to a Charity of the groups choosing.

Financial Peace University
Learn how to do the money thing God’s way and end up in better shape than you ever thought possible. Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University will be offered at St. Andrew’s beginning with a free preview on Monday, January 11 at 6:30. Heather Toth will be facilitating this class. Please make plans now to join the group.

Women’s Retreat
Are you looking for that perfect Christmas gift for the woman in your life? May we suggest a gift certificate for $100 toward the registration fee for the Women’s Retreat. Pat Godkin asks prayer for her mother, Jane, who is dealing with serious health issues.
Dana Duffy’s father, Dan, is recuperating from heart surgery.
The Witte family asks prayer for a four year girl named Peyton, who has suffered a brain aneurysm.
We extend our sympathy to Steve Sevedge and his family at the passing of Steve’s mother, Betty.
Rob Hartung reports the death of a good friend, Mike Casey, and asks our prayers for his family.
Charles Elledge wrote this morning to tell us his mother, Addalena, has died. Charles’ mother was a long time member of Pearl United Methodist Church.

Adam Witte writes: Christmas Cantata is just two weekends away! If you would like to be a part of it, there is still a place for you to join us. I would especially encourage you to come if you were a part of last year's Cantata but haven't joined us yet this year. There is still time!

We will be rehearsing the next two Wednesdays from 6:30-7:15pm and the next two Saturdays at 10am. TO: Families of the 2010 Confirmation Class
We are in the process of planning for our 2010 Confirmation Class and are happy to welcome your family and your 8th grader to this experience. We will begin the class on January 10 at 4:00 and the class will meet on Sunday afternoons from 4:00-5:00 in the sanctuary until April 25, which will be Confirmation Sunday. As we did last year, we are requesting that one parent attend the class with each student. The parent will be asked to do all the homework and participate in class discussion just as the student will be doing. This is a commitment of time for both student and parent and will also facilitate discussion on faith matters during the week at home. It will be better if one parent makes this commitment, with the other parent attending when that person cannot do so.

Confirmation is a time when students and their families explore matters of faith including Bible study; looking into questions concerning God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit; discussing the work of the church in mission, worship, and evangelism, and dealing with personal faith matters such as prayer and service. All of this leads up to Confirmation Sunday when students take vows of church membership and become full members of St. Andrews. Students who have not been previously baptized will be baptized as part of their confirmation on April 25. We will have one-on-one meetings with each student and his/her parents prior to confirmation.

Then click on 2010 Confirmation Registration. Please register beforehand so we can get an idea of how many books and other supplies we need to order.

From Adam Witte: Our THANKSGIVING EVE service will be a time to come together and reflect on the things we're thankful for. It will feature a special video presentation of the Youth program's activities and growth through this year, and two of the youth will be sharing a song of gratitude during the offering. The congregational singing will be done with only piano accompaniment, and the hymns will hearken back to fine Methodist Thanksgiving tradition. Come join us Wednesday night at 7:00 as Dr. Joe Scahill's message, the music, and reflections on our year together are sure to put you into a spirit of thanksgiving just in time for the holiday.

From Nancy Davis: THIS WEEKEND AT ST. ANDREWS. This is the first weekend of Advent and everyone is getting ready for Christmas! The message this weekend is “Interior Decorating” focusing on the “decorations” inside the stable that first Christmas night. Those decorations come in the form of people like Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and the wise men. As we assemble a traditional nativity scene we will talk about the special kind of “decoration” that each of these persons brings to this wonderful story. Some of the St. Andrews singers will share an old Peter, Paul, and Mary song “A-Soulin’”. We hope you will be with us this weekend to begin the joyous season of Advent and Christmas!

LADIES NITE OUT
You're invited to our third annual Ladies Nite Out.

St. Andrew's Family Life Center

This is a holiday mixer for all women. We will group into teams and fill kits for UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief). These will be distributed to underdeveloped countries where needed (all supplies will be provided). This will be our holiday mission project and great fun to celebrate and serve together as a group of women. "God loves a cheerful giver". It will be catered by JD's Simply Homemade Catering, providing coffee cakes, cookies, bars, hot cranberry punch, coffee, tea and water. Holiday music will also be provided. Come and join us for a warm and wonderful night of celebrating the holiday season, sharing and giving together, bring a friend. Tickets are available at the information desk in the rotunda for only $6.00 person. Sign up soon so we can get a count for catering. We'd love to make this our best Ladies Nite Out ever.

TO: Families of the 2010 Confirmation Class

We are in the process of planning for our 2010 Confirmation Class and are happy to welcome your family and your 8th grader to this experience. We will begin the class on January 10 at 4:00 and the class will meet on Sunday afternoons from 4:00-5:00 in the sanctuary until April 25, which will be Confirmation Sunday. As we did last year, we are requesting that one parent attend the class with each student. The parent will be asked to do all the homework and participate in class discussion just as the student will be doing. This is a commitment of time for both student and parent and will also facilitate discussion on faith matters during the week at home. It will be better if one parent makes this commitment, with the other parent attending when that person cannot do so.

Confirmation is a time when students and their families explore matters of faith including Bible study; looking into questions concerning God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit; discussing the work of the church in mission, worship, and evangelism, and dealing with personal faith matters such as prayer and service. All of this leads up to Confirmation Sunday when students take vows of church membership and become full members of St. Andrews. Students who have not been previously baptized will be baptized as part of their confirmation on April 25. We will have one-on-one meetings with each student and his/her parents prior to confirmation.

Then click on 2010 Confirmation Registration. Please register beforehand so we can get an idea of how many books and other supplies we need to order.

FROM DIANA FAUST: DivorceCare: Surviving the Holidays
DivorceCare: Surviving the Holidays is a helpful, encouraging seminar for people facing the holidays after a separation or divorce. The seminar will be held on Monday, Nov. 23 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s. DivorceCare for Kids will be offered for children kindergarten through age 12. Childcare will be provided for the younger ones.

The “Surviving the Holidays” seminar features practical suggestions, guidance and reassurance through video interviews with counselors, experts in divorce-related care and people who have experienced the holidays after separation or divorce. Topics to be discussed include “Why the Holidays Are Tough,” “What Emotions to Expect,” “How to Plan and Prepare,” “How to Handle Uncomfortable Situations” and “Using the Holidays to Help You Heal.”

The registration fee of $5 includes a book with over 30 daily readings providing additional insights and ideas on holiday survival.

LADIES NITE OUT
You're invited to our third annual Ladies Nite Out.
This is a holiday mixer for all women. We will group into teams and fill kits for UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief). These will be distributed to underdeveloped countries where needed (all supplies will be provided). This will be our holiday mission project and great fun to celebrate and serve together as a group of women. "God loves a cheerful giver". It will be catered by JD's Simply Homemade Catering, providing coffee cakes, cookies, bars, hot cranberry punch, coffee, tea and water. Holiday music will also be provided.
Come and join us for a warm and wonderful night of celebrating the holiday season, sharing and giving together, bring a friend. We have a lot of smart, committed people supervising our church finances. They slice and dice the numbers in all sorts of interesting and informative ways. Be assured: We have top-grade financial minds keeping close watch over our finances, toward the end of delivering maximum bang for the ministry buck. What you’re about to see are the Numbers According to Bruce: In other words, what our financial leadership simplifies for me. My eye is always on the bottom line and here are some of those financial facts:

As of the end of October, St. Andrew’s showed Year-To-Date Expenses of 1,554,249.84. The Year-To-Date Revenue was $1,502,366.06.
We are current on all financial obligations, including the mortgage and Mission Shares. (If you’re not familiar with the term “Mission Shares,” it’s what used to be called “apportionments”—St. Andrew’s “portion” of the connectional ministries of the United Methodist Church.)

Since January 1, we have received $184,321 in donations to the SHARING, GROWING, CHANGING LIVES Capital Fund for debt reduction. This is interesting: $58,661 of that total has come in since the end of the formal three-year campaign in March. All told, since SGCL began in March of 2006, we’ve reduced the debt by $2,474,448. The debt as of this writing stands at $2,567,304. The monthly interest cost has been cut by a proportionate amount, now standing at $11,500.

We are, of course, being very prudent in our budgeting for 2010. Overall staff salaries will raise by less than 2%. The only item in the budget showing an appreciable percentage increase is our Mission Shares to the United Methodist Church, which increase every year by 10%.

Watching the Memorial Service from Fort Hood yesterday, I heard the chaplain reading from Isaiah: These soldiers heard a call, “Who shall I send?” and responded, “Here I am, send me.” I thank you for those who have said “send me” in service of America. There’s a direct link between what their service and the religious freedom I try never to take for granted. Amen.

The presentation of our Christmas Cantata, The Promise Of Light, is fast approaching. For all of you who said that October was too early for Christmas music, I can't necessarily disagree with you--but tonight puts us at five rehearsals before we sing in worship! The good news is that, with the performance CD as a reference and a bunch of helpful folks around, it's really pretty easy to learn the music.

Parents, if you have children in Sunday School aged Pre-K through 5th grade, they are going to be learning portions of the Cantata to sing along and add some sign language starting in their classes this weekend. What better way to get the family into the Christmas spirit than to commit to singing in this group together? Some of my fondest childhood memories are of singing Christmas music with my family; this short-term commitment is a wonderful chance to create those memories in your own family.

It's not too late to plug in; if you've been meaning to come and just haven't gotten around to it, by all means, make tonight the night you do. We rehearse tonight (and Wednesdays through Dec. 9th) at 6:30 in the Sanctuary. Come join us!

The concert begins at 2:00 in the Rotunda and will feature many of your favorite holiday carols. The Christmas Tree will be up and lit; you have enjoyed a wonderful pot-luck in the Family Life Center so what better way to finish the day than enjoying some wonderful handbell music. Earlier today, we had a memorial service for Eleanor Davis, one of the great ladies of this congregation. We extend our deepest sympathy to Eleanor’s husband, Charlie, to her children Alex Birdwell and Mary Ellen Greenwood, to the entire family and her many friends.

We pay directly to the families, utility companies, mortgage, telephone bills and buy groceries.”

This should be a memorable weekend. Ever since Natalie Grant performed at St. Andrews—two years ago next month—I’ve wanted to do something with her songs HELD and IN BETTER HANDS. Heather Doll, Craig Bence and the band have been working with the music for several weeks. I’m playing bass; the songs are powerful enough that I have to remind myself to keep hitting the notes, because I get caught up in the material and just want to listen. I have a message that I hope will do justice to the theme—and to a little guy in an incubator in Texas, whose struggle for life has mightily informed this week’s writing experience. People who have seen the manuscript tell me it’s touched their hearts. I invite you read the 5th chapter of Luke in preparation, verses 17-26, in preparation.

This is our second football season since starting the Saturday evening worship service. Last year, there were a lot of 11:00 and 7:00 Husker games, which was good for us. Due to the recent Thursday evening game against my alma mater (I cheered for Nebraska!), NU has had the past couple of Saturdays off. This week, we run into our second 2:30 kick-off of the season. Ouch. It comes with the territory. We’ll have a fine time on Saturday, trusting in the promise that where two or more or gathered (Iowa State fans, folks like that), the Lord will be there also. The Saturday option was designed to give people maximum flexibility in their weekend worship experience, and it’s worked out pretty well, so far. We’ll hope to see you sometime this weekend. Your presence is always an encouragement.

Chances are, in today’s mail, you’ll be receiving an invitation to THE ACTS 10 GYM. I’m looking forward to rolling out the theme this weekend. We’ll see the first of six short films based on themes found in the 10th Chapter of Acts. Each service will start with our theme song: INVITE, GIVE & PRAY. You’ll recognize the tune; I refashioned the words. You’ve been hearing us say this for a couple of months now: WE WANT TO PUMP YOU UP!

Nancy Davis chimes in: WE WANT TO PUMP YOU UP with our prayer calendar! One of the calendars will be included this weekend in the worship bulletin. You may have also received one with your newsletter this week. We hope all St. Andrews families will use the calendar every day as a way to remind ourselves of the importance of prayer in our lives. If you have children in your home, they will enjoy counting the various objects called for each day and figuring how much money that would be for their prayer boxes. If you don’t have children, you can certainly use the calendar as a way to consider how fortunate you are and how blessed by God. And we can all remember to say the prayer accompanying each day. You can bring collected coins in each week – there will be a place in the rotunda for you to put them. Remember – Prayer Ultimately Matters – so Pray in your homes during this season of sharing and stewardship.

I ask in the name of the Lord Jesus: increase our love for you and for one another. Amen.

In case you’re wondering where keyboard maestro Leon Adams is these days, we received this from him this morning. He’ll be back with us at the end of the month: Greetings Bruce. The "Rave On" tour is going very well. All the shows have either sold out or near sold out so far. The band is rockin' and I'm still amazed of how many people are still Buddy Holly fans across the country. I'm in near Grand Rapids, Michigan now, and we have two shows scheduled for tomorrow and Friday. We have a nice tour bus just like the last tour I did in February. Tell everyone I said Hi and "RAVE ON!!!!!"

HIGH SCHOOL // October 17: Pam and Greg Twist have reserved a campfire spot at Vala's Pumpkin Patch for the senior high kids 5pm to 10:00pm. The cost is $12.25 to get in. I am asking that parents take and pick up their kids for this event……since Vala's is open 9am to 10pm kids may want to go early. I plan to be at the campfire from 5pm to 10pm to spend time with the kids, but this is not a church sponsored event and therefore St. Andrew's is waived of any responsibility for this event. In short, parents are responsible for their kids in regards to this activity.

MIDDLE SCHOOL // October 18: Service Project: Decorating Pumpkins with the residents of the Parson's House 1:15pm-2:30pm. Please bring your son or daughter directly to the Parson's House located at 14325 Eagle Run Drive 68164 (less than 5 minutes from the church) I have been doing this project with youth and the residents for the past three years. The residents absolutely love having us there! Please e-mail me to sign up….. Any questions let me know.

Eleanor Davis is hospitalized with continuing heart problems.
Madonna Sappenfield is scheduled for surgery on October 15.
Gina Hansen is receiving cancer treatment.
Others being treated for cancer include: Molly Scritchfield’s Dad, Bruce; Sara Keim’s friend, Geri; Kevin Kathka’s mother, Deb.
Dee Harold’s sister-in-law, Sharon, is critically ill.
Virginia Hatcher’s father is recovering from surgery.
Bruce & Nancy Davis great nephew, John, is an NICU patient n Houston, Texas,
Kathy Raabe is waiting for test results.
Shawna Rector is scheduled for an MRI on knee, October 15.
We extend our sympathy to Kim and Michaela Christensen. Michaela’s grandmother has passed away, as has Kim’s uncle.

I dreamed about baseball gloves last night. Perhaps it had something to do with a catch not made in left field in Dodger Stadium last night. I fell asleep in the 4th quarter of the football game. The Huskers had taken the lead by the time I zoned out, and I was pleased this morning to see they held on for an important victory. Yes, I am a University of Missouri alum, but I am pragmatic enough to understand that Nebraska football success translates into a better mood for most everyone in this state, including our Saints of Andrew. So this is my football fight song: There Is No Place Like Nebraska!

THIS TUESDAY: DANGERS OF THE INTERNET! What every parent needs to know! Join us in the sanctuary Tuesday, October 13 (6:30pm -8pm) for a presentation by Bridget Fitzpatrick, and educational specialist with the Omaha Police Department. Ms. Fitzpatrick will show parents how easy their children can gain access to exploitive websites and images (over Facebook, Myspace, and cell phones!). We will be educated on the following topics: Risks and Dangers on the Internet, Signs That Your Child Might Be At Risk, When is Your Child Ready for the Internet, and My Space and Facebook use. TWO ITEMS FROM MUSIC DIRECTOR ADAM WITTE:
The annual CHRISTMAS CANTATA is fast approaching! We will be presenting a new cantata entitled "The Promise of Light" this year--the arrangements are both uplifting and fun. As always, you do not have to be a member of the St. Andrew's Singers to join us for this musical project; simply come to rehearsal and we will get you plugged in. Rehearsals begin Wednesday night, October 21st, from 6:30-7:15 in the Sanctuary; we will share the cantata in worship on Dec. 12th and 13th.

Also, you may have noticed a new link on the St. Andrew's website (http://www.standrewsomaha.net/) -- in the middle of the bottom of the page, there is a link to my new blog. In my own personal effort to 'pump up' my spiritual life, I will be using this blog as a forum to explore issues pertaining to faith, church, music, and the relationships between them.
