Note From The Editor: I was DELIGHTED at the excellent turnout for all the worship services this weekend. I heard great reports about the Thanksgiving Eve worship experience. Thank you Joe Scahill! There seems to be a sweet, sweet spirit every time St. Andrew’s gathers. I’m feeling particularly blessed to be part of this ministry right now.

THE ANNUAL INTERGENERATIONAL CHRISTMAS CANTATA
Adam Witte writes: Christmas Cantata is just two weekends away! If you would like to be a part of it, there is still a place for you to join us. I would especially encourage you to come if you were a part of last year's Cantata but haven't joined us yet this year. There is still time!
We will be rehearsing the next two Wednesdays from 6:30-7:15pm and the next two Saturdays at 10am. We will be sharing the cantata at all three services on the weekend of December 12-13, but you do not have to be at all three. If you are only able to attend one, that is just fine--we would love to have you join us. If you have any questions or would like to get involved, please contact Adam Witte at awitte@standrewsomaha.net or 431-8560 extension 18.

FROM: Bob Davis
TO: Families of the 2010 Confirmation Class
We are in the process of planning for our 2010 Confirmation Class and are happy to welcome your family and your 8th grader to this experience. We will begin the class on January 10 at 4:00 and the class will meet on Sunday afternoons from 4:00-5:00 in the sanctuary until April 25, which will be Confirmation Sunday. As we did last year, we are requesting that one parent attend the class with each student. The parent will be asked to do all the homework and participate in class discussion just as the student will be doing. This is a commitment of time for both student and parent and will also facilitate discussion on faith matters during the week at home. It will be better if one parent makes this commitment, with the other parent attending when that person cannot do so.
Confirmation is a time when students and their families explore matters of faith including Bible study; looking into questions concerning God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit; discussing the work of the church in mission, worship, and evangelism, and dealing with personal faith matters such as prayer and service. All of this leads up to Confirmation Sunday when students take vows of church membership and become full members of St. Andrews. Students who have not been previously baptized will be baptized as part of their confirmation on April 25. We will have one-on-one meetings with each student and his/her parents prior to confirmation.
You will find a registration form for confirmation on our web site – www.standrewsomaha.net. Click on the Youth Link which will take you to the Youth Page. Then click on 2010 Confirmation Registration. Please register beforehand so we can get an idea of how many books and other supplies we need to order.

THIS JUST IN: We will finish the Auction portion of the 9th Annual St. Andrew’s Dinner/Dance/Auction at Champion’s Run Country Club, after church on Sunday, December 6.
From Adam Witte: Our THANKSGIVING EVE service will be a time to come together and reflect on the things we're thankful for. It will feature a special video presentation of the Youth program's activities and growth through this year, and two of the youth will be sharing a song of gratitude during the offering. The congregational singing will be done with only piano accompaniment, and the hymns will hearken back to fine Methodist Thanksgiving tradition. Come join us Wednesday night at 7:00 as Dr. Joe Scahill's message, the music, and reflections on our year together are sure to put you into a spirit of thanksgiving just in time for the holiday.
From Nancy Davis: THIS WEEKEND AT ST. ANDREWS. This is the first weekend of Advent and everyone is getting ready for Christmas! The message this weekend is “Interior Decorating” focusing on the “decorations” inside the stable that first Christmas night. Those decorations come in the form of people like Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, and the wise men. As we assemble a traditional nativity scene we will talk about the special kind of “decoration” that each of these persons brings to this wonderful story. Some of the St. Andrews singers will share an old Peter, Paul, and Mary song “A-Soulin’”. We hope you will be with us this weekend to begin the joyous season of Advent and Christmas!
GUESS WHAT? If you bring your pledge card to any of these services, we invite you to put it in the collection plate to be counted with pledges already received. And, of course, you can pledge online: www.standrewsomaha.net.

Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town and spend a year there, doing business and making money.’ Yet you do not even know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wishes, we will live and do this or that.’ As it is, you boast in your arrogance…

Nancy and I are just back from lunch and a visit to Lakeside Hospital. The news on Adrian is all really upbeat. I spent much of this weekend in a daze. In fact, I never even got around to making my pledge. Happily, I can do it on line, even as we speak. Thanks to the wonders of Windows, I can even share the process with you, the reader. Okay. Let’s go the St. Andrew’s home page: www.standrewsomaha.net.... That was easy. I like the new pictures Mandy has posted… There’s PLEDGE ON LINE. Okay. Hit that link….. Enter Name, phone number, e-address, confirm the e-address. Done. Enter the pledge amount. I’ll be paying monthly, so that’s my FREQUECY selection. Make a decision about whether I’d rather write a monthly check or have it automatically withdrawn. Hit SEND. Up pops a screen saying I’ll get a confirmation e-mail very shortly…. Hey, said confirmation is already in the in-box! Cool! That was easy. And now I don’t have to worry about calling myself as part of any follow up.

From Joel Long: This is the second year St. Andrew's has hosted the Pathfinders Chorus free will offering concert to benefit the Goodfellows Program. The Goodfellows program provides assistance to our less fortunate neighbors in an effort to "throw out the tow-line" and pull them through a tough time in their lives. The World-Herald pays for all administrative costs so every dime contributed goes to those in need. The majority of the program provides year-round emergency assistance primarily for utility and housing payments. Help is also given through a holiday food voucher program and a shoe/coat/underwear program. The Pathfinders have a 40-year tradition with more than 80 members based in Fremont. The concert will be December 19th at 7:00 p.m.

JOYCE MILLER writes: The Ambassador Choir would like to thank all those attending the concert on Sunday. We enjoyed ringing our Christmas Holiday music for you and hope it was a gift for each of you as you prepare for Advent and Christmas. For those not able to attend Sunday's concert, we would invite you to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1821 North 90th Street on December 6th at 2:00 when we will again present the Very Merry Christmas concert. The choir would also once again like to thank St. Andrew's for the use of the Music Room each Wednesday night for rehearsals.

A MEDITATION FOR THE PEARL FOOD PANTRY CHRISTMAS TREE PROJECT:
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill, and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.

Hebrews 13:20-21
Now may the God of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you complete in everything good so that you may do his will, working among us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Let’s say a word of prayer: Lord God, there are a zillion-and-one things going on in the life of St. Andrew’s this weekend. I pray that, through all the busy-ness and activity, we’ll remember what we’re all about: WE ARE THE CHURCH! Whether we’re at 15150 W. Throw this into the mix, too: At 10:00 on Saturday morning, we’ll have people up here HANGING THE GREENS—as in putting up the Christmas tree. Yes, I know, it’s early for that, but I’m told I signed off on the idea, so it must be a good one.

We look forward to working with all of you in confirmation next year!

You can purchase things at auction that will give you a head start on Christmas shopping. Most important: You will be supporting St. Andrew’s while sharing fellowship with others.

FINANCIAL FACT SHEET
Bruce Davis
We have a lot of smart, committed people supervising our church finances. They slice and dice the numbers in all sorts of interesting and informative ways. Be assured: We have top-grade financial minds keeping close watch over our finances, toward the end of delivering maximum bang for the ministry buck. What you’re about to see are the Numbers According to Bruce: In other words, what our financial leadership simplifies for me. My eye is always on the bottom line and here are some of those financial facts:
As of the end of October, St. Andrew’s showed Year-To-Date Expenses of 1,554,249.84. The Year-To-Date Revenue was $1,502,366.06.
We are current on all financial obligations, including the mortgage and Mission Shares. (If you’re not familiar with the term “Mission Shares,” it’s what used to be called “apportionments”—St. Andrew’s “portion” of the connectional ministries of the United Methodist Church.)
Since January 1, we have received $184,321 in donations to the SHARING, GROWING, CHANGING LIVES Capital Fund for debt reduction. This is interesting: $58,661 of that total has come in since the end of the formal three-year campaign in March. All told, since SGCL began in March of 2006, we’ve reduced the debt by $2,474,448. The debt as of this writing stands at $2,567,304. The monthly interest cost has been cut by a proportionate amount, now standing at $11,500.
We are, of course, being very prudent in our budgeting for 2010. Overall staff salaries will raise by less than 2%. The only item in the budget showing an appreciable percentage increase is our Mission Shares to the United Methodist Church, which increase every year by 10%.
This is about all numbers I need to keep straight. If you want to know more, I invite you to contact Business Administrator Heather Doll, who is an always helpful fountain of information. Or, contact any of the members of our 2009 Gracious Generosity Team: Chairperson John Langwith, Treasurer Marsha Eurek, Joel Falk, Mark Scott, John Allbery, Scott Mingus, Stacy Scholtz, Gloria Billingsley, Cami Pitman, John Luddy, Keith Schmidt & Ken Washer.

Since, then, we have a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

ADAM WITTE writes:
The presentation of our Christmas Cantata, The Promise Of Light, is fast approaching. For all of you who said that October was too early for Christmas music, I can't necessarily disagree with you--but tonight puts us at five rehearsals before we sing in worship! The good news is that, with the performance CD as a reference and a bunch of helpful folks around, it's really pretty easy to learn the music.
Parents, if you have children in Sunday School aged Pre-K through 5th grade, they are going to be learning portions of the Cantata to sing along and add some sign language starting in their classes this weekend. What better way to get the family into the Christmas spirit than to commit to singing in this group together? Some of my fondest childhood memories are of singing Christmas music with my family; this short-term commitment is a wonderful chance to create those memories in your own family.
It's not too late to plug in; if you've been meaning to come and just haven't gotten around to it, by all means, make tonight the night you do. We rehearse tonight (and Wednesdays through Dec. 9th) at 6:30 in the Sanctuary. Come join us!
*
From Diana Faust: The Advent Conspiracy: Can Christmas Still Change the World? The story of Christ's birth is a story of promise, hope, and a revolutionary love. So, what happened? What was once a time to celebrate the birth of a savior has somehow turned into a season of stress, traffic jams, and shopping lists. And when it's all over, many of us are left with presents to return, looming debt that will take months to pay off, and this empty feeling of missed purpose. Is this what we really want out of Christmas? What if Christmas became a world-changing event again? It can be a time of worship, meaning and giving that is prophetic, powerful and transformative. In celebrating Christmas in the way of the story Christ followers are taught how to worship fully, spend less, give more and love all this Christmas and every Christmas. Join the Adult Sunday School class for this Advent Study that will begin Nov. 29 at 11:15. Contact Diana to register – dfaust@standrewsomaha.net.

Did you know that we continue to pay down on the St. Andrew’s Building Debt? We’ve paid off another $35,000 on principle since the three-year campaign ended in March.

Joyce Miller writes: The Omaha Ambassador Handbell Choir invites you to join us on November 22nd for a Holiday Concert. The concert begins at 2:00 in the Rotunda and will feature many of your favorite holiday carols. The Christmas Tree will be up and lit; you have enjoyed a wonderful pot-luck in the Family Life Center so what better way to finish the day than enjoying some wonderful handbell music. Many of the ringers in the choir are members of St. Andrews. We would love to see you at the concert. Refreshments will served by the wonderful bakers in the choir. The concert is free and open to all so invite you friends to come and join us on November 22nd. A Love Offering will be taken

Prayer Matters
Earlier today, we had a memorial service for Eleanor Davis, one of the great ladies of this congregation. We extend our deepest sympathy to Eleanor’s husband, Charlie, to her children Alex Birdwell and Mary Ellen Greenwood, to the entire family and her many friends.
We have also learned of the passing of Bob Bottger, former member of St. Andrew’s.
Mary Dougherty sister who is suffering from MS.
Donell Johnson asks prayer for a 22 year old man from Norfolk, dealing with serious complications from the H1N1 flu.
Ongoing Prayer Concerns include:
Gina Hansen, who is dealing with cancer..
Susan Harrison, receiving treatment for melanoma.
Kathy Rabbe, diagnosed with cancer.
Also receiving cancer treatment. Kevin Kathka’s mother, Deb; Teresa Wheelock’s father; Beth Whited’s co-worker Katie Brink.
Dee Harold’s sister-in-law, Sharon, is critically ill.
Lynette Short’s father, Roger Hansen, is recovering from hip replacement surgery.
Let’s pray: Lord God, we thank you for the life of Eleanor Davis, a woman of great faith who meant so much to this congregation. Wherever there is grief in this congregation, spoken or unspoken, please wipe away our tears. Give us the faith to believe that nothing can separate us from your love. I ask in the name of Jesus our Shepherd Savior. Amen.

Amen.

Daniel 10:18-20
Again one in human form touched me and strengthened me. He said, “Do not fear, greatly beloved, you are safe. Be strong and courageous!” When he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, “Let my Lord speak, for you have strengthened me.”

You may not realize it, but our Hans & Franz/Acts 10 Gym skits have roots deep in Christian tradition, specifically the concept of the Holy Fool. The Holy Fool was a religious figure who communicated profound truth through non-conventional behavior. The Eastern Orthodox Church was/is particularly big on Holy Fools. The Holy Fool could get away with saying things that would get others in hot water. If you’re interested in learning more, Google this genuinely interesting topic.
