COMING TO ST. ANDREW’S
September 12 & 13
ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE: THE EXTENDED PLAY VERSION
JIM WOODLAND SHARES THIS INVITATION:
FROM US TO YOU - THINGS YOUR MOTHER SHOULD KNOW
Have you thought life was a Magical Mystery Tour? Do you feel like a Nowhere Man? Does Yesterday seem like A Hard Day’s Night? Do you find yourself saying Help! I’m a Loser. In My LIfe I Should Have Known Better Eight Days a Week?
Then join us on September 12 or 13th for ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE: THE EXTENDED PLAY VERSION. Bruce Davis (St. Andrew’s very own Paperback Writer), With a Little Help from (His) Friends will share Words of Love. He will not harp about You Never Give Me Your Money. He will say that you Can’t Buy me Love. He will tell you Something about A Day in the Life so you can Act Naturally Any Time at All as you Carry That Weight Across the Universe.
Because Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band has a gig, Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite, Bruce will be joined by the St. Andrews Band, the Horns of Jericho, and the St. Andrews Choir led by Polythene Pam.
In The End you will not be The Fool on the Hill. You will leave the service thinking about The Things We Said Today. Getting Better, feeling Glad All Over about The Word.

Will you pray with me?
Lord God, we praise you for another grace-filled weekend or worship, study and fellowship at St. Andrew’s. In 1 Corinthians, Paul compares the church to the human body, made up of different component parts, each with different functions, but all serving a common purpose. It is right and good that we thank you for all the people who are members of the Body of Christ here at St. Andrew’s, giving of their time and treasure to make this ministry possible. May we each find our place of service and value the service of our brothers and sisters in Christ. There were, of course, new people visiting this weekend. We would love to incorporate them into the congregation. May all who come to St. Andrew’s experience us as a body radiating the warmth of Your Holy Spirit. I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

FROM THE CHILDREN’S DEPARTMENT: No greater feeling!
It is always with such awe and wonder to see just how many children come out to Sunday School and come through the Steppin’ Up Parade! Actually, there were still Preschoolers in the rooms that didn’t parade. It is such a blessing to serve the parents and children of St. Andrew’s. It’s also rewarding to see teachers step up and take charge of the Spiritual Development of our St. Andrew’s Children. Be sure to thank them when you pick up/drop off your child. I want to specially thank Kris and Wendy for their leadership and dedication, Tracy Bellamy-Willy Wonka as well as the Children’s Leadership Team for all their service to Children’s Ministries. We look forward to working with your children again through another year of learning!!
Thanks to all the others who helped with hot dogs! That is certainly one to do again next year!
What’s next? Mission Possible Kids, Movie Nights, October Wednesday night Bible Studies “Wilderness Trail to Crocodile Dock Fall Fest” (10/30), Upward Basketball (Jan.)….oh, don’t forget Christmas! Watch for more details to come!!

THIS IS STEPPING UP WEEKEND
Saturday, August 22 5:00 & Sunday, August 23, 10:00

Sunday, August 23, 8:30 AM
Rev. Joe Scahill preaching: A SINGLE GRAIN OF WHEAT

This is a big weekend in the life of the congregation, kicking off a new season in the church school. As Nancy said last weekend, many of us grew up calling this PROMOTION SUNDAY: the kiddies are promoted/step up to their new classes. Let’s be clear about something. We have a lot of things—GREAT THINGS—going on in the St. Andrew’s Children’s Ministry, including Upward Basketball, Vacation Bible School, a host of special events sprinkled throughout the year. But the backbone of our Children’s Ministry is the weekly Church School program. These other things are intended, not as substitutes for the children’s Church School, but as supplements. The Church School hour is the front-line of our teaching ministry to the little ones. At the same time, we are teaching the children the holy habit of Sabbath observance. At the risk of falling into cliché, at St. Andrew’s we really do believe it takes a village (in our case, a congregation) to raise the little ones in the way of the Lord. It takes adult volunteers. It takes caring parents. It takes the financial support of every person reading this mailing. Let’s be clear on this, too: We’re talking about forming the faith and character of these children. Please, please, please do not look at this as just another activity your children are involved in, to be supported by your dues or activity fee or whatever. THIS IS MINISTRY IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST TOWARD THE END OF TEACHING OF YOUR CHILD THE WAY THAT LEADS TO LIFE ABUNDANT AND ETERNAL—and not only your child, but all the children who come here. I believe what we’re doing here is of ultimate importance. I hope you do, too.
*
It’s little wonder that children are on my mind today. Two years ago today, August 19, 2007, was a Sunday. I went into worship that morning knowing my daughter Mary was in labor. I came out of the 10:00 service to see a flashing light on my telephone, and a message from my son-in-law that MADELINE TEISSIER du CROS had been born! I don’t see how people can look at a little child and believe their existence is somehow a random cosmic accident. I don’t pretend to understand all the whys and wherefores of creation, but I firmly believe it is the handiwork of the Creator. Specifically, I believe it’s the handiwork the Creator made known to us in the person of Jesus Christ, who said, “Let the children come to me, for to them belongs the kingdom of God!”

FROM BOB DAVIS: I would like to report that we had a great Senior High Mission Trip Stockholder’s Dinner on Saturday. Youth and adults shared their testimonies from the trip. We watched a video of our mission trip highlights (thank you Tracy Cogdill for putting the DVD together). Last but not least we had AWESOME food (thanks to Sandi Dawson and her catering business Simply Homemade Catering; please note she donated he time and use of her catering shop to prepare food for over a 120 people). I would also like to thank the parents who helped make everything come together.
Next year our Senior High Youth Group will be traveling to Benton Harbor, Michigan (south west corner of Michigan) on July 16-24, 2010 for their mission trip. I reserved 72 spots. Please note 10 of these spots will be reserved for adult leaders). Reserve your youth’s spot by e-mailing Bob at bobdavis@standrewsomaha.net. We will not be able to increase our reserved spots due to the site rules so reserve your son or daughters spot today. The cost of the trip will be $368 plus the cost of an activity (this year our activity was whitewater rafting and the cost was $70 per person).
I still need roughly 4 Sunday school teachers and 4 Wednesday night adult leaders. Just send me and e-mail or give me a call and I would be happy to tell you all about this great opportunity.

All-Church Study
We are journeying people. From the time we enter into the world until the moment we take our final breath, we make our way as life unfolds before us. So it is with faith. It too is a lifelong journey. Along the way we encounter others, and at these crossing points we encounter the living God. Our next All-Church Study is Adult Crossings: God’s Journey With Us. We will be looking at 8 core Bible stories, and how they impact the faith journeys of God’s people. The study will begin the week of Sept. 27. Small groups are being formed during the week which will include video presentation and discussion. If you are interested in serving as a small group leader, or are interested in joining one of the small groups please contact Diana at dfaust@standrewsomaha.net.

SEPTEMBER BOOK CLUB
The September Book Club will be held at the Quick’s home, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. The books they will be discussing is Something Beautiful for God” The Classic Account of Mother Teresa’s Journey into Compassion by Malcolm Muggeridge. This book interprets the life of Mother Teresa through the eyes of a modern-day skeptic who became literally transformed within her presence, describing her as "a light which could never be extinguished". Please purchase your own copy of the book.
WEDNESDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY
The Case for a Creator: A Journalist Investigates Scientific Evidence That Points Toward God by Lee Strobel is the study for the Wednesday Evening Bible Study beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9. In this six-session study the former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune decided to investigate the science he had once accepted as truth. Did science point toward or away from God? Strobel concludes that, when correctly interpreted, science and biblical teaching support each other. The cost of the study guide is $8. Contact Diana to register.

Lord God, this is a big week at St. Andrew’s, an exciting week! New classes are starting. We’re gearing up for STEPPING UP WEEKEND! A new season of choir rehearsal is just nine days away. Less visible, but no less important, we have various committees and work areas making decisions that will have a big impact on what happens next at St. Andrew’s. I ask that your spirit will be with us in these coming days. Shepherd us in the direction of your choosing. And may all that we do be done in praise and service to you. Amen.

Amen.

From Bruce Davis: This is my mother’s 85th birthday. In 1924, Calvin Coolidge was in the White House and became the first Chief Executive to address the nation via the new medium of radio; Joseph Stalin came to power in Russia; Adolph Hitler began writing Mein Kampf in a German prison cell; an American airman flew from New York to San Francisco and it only took him 21 hours and 48 minutes!--and on August 14, Mary Frances Ralston came into the world, born to a store keeper and his wife in Caldwell County, Missouri. She’s been a widow for four years now, and is living near my sister Annette, north of Houston. My mother has been blessed with a long and remarkable life, and is still going strong: writing memoirs (the first installment was PREACHER’S WIFE), playing piano for various gatherings; taking no small amount of pride in being an ardent Democrat in an otherwise staunchly Republican retirement community. Mary Frances is a stitch. I wouldn’t be surprised if she lives to be a hundred.

From Diana Faust: All-Church Study
*
Let’s pray together: Lord God, on my mother’s birthday, I say a word of particular thanks for the older members of this congregation. Our veteran Saints of Andrew have seen incredible change in their journey through this thing called life: World Wars; economic boom and bust; not so long ago, the internet would have sounded like science fiction! I give thanks for the faith of these saints: faith that has kept them standing through fierce winds of change and the challenges of aging. As your servant Mary Frances Davis says, Old age isn’t for sissies! May your grace be with your Senior Saints.
And one more thing, Lord, if there are any church drop-outs reading this, please let them know we'd love to have them drop-in this weekend. Amen.

PASTOR STEVE SMITH writes from Pierce County: Bruce, could you ask Saint Andrews to pray for the people of the former Stark Valley United Methodist Church. Since 1882 this community met at a crossroads in rural Nebraska. In 1947 the original church burned. A new church was consecrated on the site in 1949. The very same people who literally built that building with their own hands and sweat gathered this morning at 7:00 am. I read some scripture, we prayed and then the building. Was fired and is now buried. This is for them a death and they are all in mourning at the burial of the central core of their community
Thanks, Steve

Hear the prayers of your church, Lord God, for people listed above, and all others dealing with loss, anxiety or pain. There is not a person reading this mailing who doesn’t have their own needs. Maybe our readers will pause right now……..and lift a prayer to you. Help us to believe you are on the receiving end of our petitions, that you hear and that you care. I ask us in the name of Jesus, who taught us to ask and believe we will receive. Amen.

Following up on SOLOMON IN NEVERLAND: A last word on Michael Jackson. My literary cousin, Stephen Davis, was the ghost writer on Jackson’s autobiography, MOONWALK. Stephen is perhaps America’s leading chronicler of rock-and-roll, having penned full length books on The Rolling Stones, Jim Morrison, Guns ‘N Roses, Aerosmith, to name a few. His 1985 book on Led Zepplin, HAMMER OF THE GODS, was a New York Times bestseller. I had supposed Jackson’s death would be a financial windfall for Cousin Stephen, but he was paid a flat fee for MOONWALK, so there are no new royalties coming in. I ran my Michael Jackson material by Stephen, asking him if I was being fair. He told me what he’s been quoted as saying in other places: You can believe everything you’ve ever heard about Michael Jackson—except the child molestation charges. Jackson was 28 years old when Cousin Stephen collaborated with him on MOONWALK. Stephen remembers a very kind and gentle young man. Stephen received news of Jackson’s passing with great sadness.

MUSIC OPPORTUNITIES FROM ADAM WITTE:
With school just about to start, it's time to start thinking about getting involved in the Music Ministries at St. Andrew's. There are several ways you can plug in:
The St. Andrew's Singers are the adult choir that sings in worship weekly on Sunday mornings during the school year. Are you among those who have talked yourself out of joining? This may help--here are a couple of common misconceptions:
"I have to be able to read music to be a part of choir." -- Not true! There are plenty of folks already in the group who either have very limited music-reading abilities or can't read it at all.
"I will get in trouble if I have to miss a Wednesday or Sunday." -- Again, not true. Our motto regarding attendance is that "Life Happens;" we are happy for you to be in attendance anytime your schedule permits; this is why we make rehearsal CD's. Also, several of the members choose to sing at only one service on Sundays, and that's perfectly fine.
The St. Andrew's Singers begin rehearsal on Wednesday, August 26th at 7pm in the Sanctuary. If you like to sing, want to serve the Lord with your talents, and are looking forward to making new friends, please come and join us. If you have any questions, please contact Pam Fleury at plfleury@mpsomaha.org or 498-9023.
The Horns of Jericho and AX of the Apostles are the Praise Bands for worship. AX consists of guitars, keyboards and drums and backs up the Praise Teams. The Horns comprise any manner of brass and woodwind instrument in addition to AX, and we are happy to include any string players who are interested. If you would like to be a part of one of these groups, there is a somewhat informal audition process. Please contact Adam Witte at awitte@standrewsomaha.net or 431-8560 extension 18 for more information.
The Handbell Choir has been practicing and ringing all Summer long, but they are looking for new members as well! If you enjoy music, have a gift for rhythm, or are just interested in becoming part of a Music Ministry that will expose you to new things and new friends, this could be a perfect fit for you. They rehearse at 6pm on Wednesdays in the Music Rehearsal Room. If you have any questions, please contact Adam Witte or director Joyce Miller at jmiller@tconl.com.
The Youth Praise Band, called Momentum, is a group for youth aged 6th-12th grades who are interested in singing or playing instruments for the youth worship services on Sundays. Any instrument or voice range is welcome; all that's required is a love of music and a desire to serve God through your voice or instrument. If you have a youth in this age range who is interested in participating, please contact Adam Witte for more information. This group will begin rehearsals at 11:15am on Sunday, September 20th.
There are three Children's Choirs for children from age 4 years through 5th grade. The Music Makers (4- and 5-year-olds) and Joyful Sounds (K-2nd grade) are combined into one larger choir under the co-direction of Adam Witte and Sarah Jessick. They rehearse Wednesday nights from 5:30-5:55pm in the Sacristy (the room behind the Sanctuary). The Mighty Doves (3rd-5th grade), under the direction of Pam Fleury, rehearse Wednesday nights from 5:30-5:55pm in the Music Rehearsal Room. If you have children in these age groups, we invite you to get them involved; Sunday School is a great place for them to start learning about God, and Children's Choirs are a great place for them to start learning about how they can serve Him, young as they are. These rehearsals begin Wednesday, September 16th. If you have any questions regarding these groups, please contact Pam Fleury or Adam Witte.

NANCY DAVIS WRITES: OUR CHILDREN NEED YOU! YES – YOU!
We still need some teachers and helpers for our children’s education program on Saturday nights and Sunday mornings at 10:00. I have seen the new curriculum and it will not only be a great learning experience for the kids – it will also be fun!. We need to have two adults in every classroom for safety purposes and this means that teachers and helpers have someone to share the responsibility. This is an especially important time for parents of these children to step up and volunteer. If we have several volunteers, the responsibility can be passed around and no one person would miss worship very often. (Dads, this means you too!) Kris Simerly would love to hear from you today and I highly encourage you to contact her as soon as you can. Stepping Up Weekend is very close – what will you do to help make this year of Christian education at St. Andrews the very best it can be?

BOB DAVIS IS BACK AT WORK AND HAS THIS TO SAY:
On behalf of the senior high youth, I wanted to thank everyone who supported this year’s senior high mission trip! It was truly an amazing experience for the kids and the adult leaders! We will be holding a stock holders dinner on Saturday, August 15 from 6pm to 7pm. We would love for you to come and hear about our experience in Cortez, Colorado! Check out a couple of the comments from two adult leaders that went on the trip with us this year!
FROM PAUL ROTH: “Since I have had the opportunity to go on 2 youth mission trips, I cannot explain the feeling when I see a youth experience the Holy Spirit for the first time. I just sent a spam e-mail to the drama team because of their contribution to assist some youth who were unable to pay for the trip. Below is a copy of my e-mail:
Rafting on the Pudre River $85
4 in a room @ Motel 6 $68
Filling a van with gas $71
Seeing the Holy Spirit embrace a youth for the first time . . . PRICELESS!
When Jesus left this earth he gave everyone 3 special gifts:
Unconditional Love
A Joyous Heart
An Open Mind
Our youth used these gifts brilliantly as they served the Lord and the community of Cortez. God Bless!
From Greg Twist: “I am just reporting back on the youth mission trip to Cortez, Co. that the drama team help fund with a generous donation. I was one of nine adults that accompanied 45 youths to Cortez from July 17-24. We arrived on Sunday night spent two days scraping, caulking and painting houses and then two days working with young people (6-11 years old) at Kids camp where the local kids played, had reading and craft time and performed skits. I was so very proud of our youth!!! They awoke early and went to bed late, worked very hard with no complaints, they gave piggy back rides to young kids till they could hardly walk and most importantly they really developed their relationship with Jesus during the week, some for perhaps the first time. I can not put into words how proud I was and remain of the St Andrews youth.”
Attention upcoming 6th graders! We welcome you to be a part of our youth service starting on August 23 at 10am in the Family Life Center. We are so excited to have you as part of the St. Andrew’s Youth group!

On the weekend of September 12 & 13, we’ll be offering ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE: THE EXTENDED PLAY VERSION. On Easter, we used Beatles tunes to tell the story of Holy Week. The EXTENDED PLAY VERSION will incorporate about twice as many songs, starting at John 1:1 and taking us through the ascension. We’ve started casting parts. The casting continues on Wednesday (tomorrow) 6:30-7:30. We may well have the casting done this week, but there will still be opportunity to participate in the LET IT BE SINGERS.

Lord God, I read Paul’s confession to the Romans and see a man struggling with what it means to be human in a broken world. The apostle’s sense of his own personal contradictions, particularly in chapter 7, verse 15, hit close to home. None of us are righteous, are we? I’m certainly not--and I cry with Paul, “Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?” I thank you for the hope I share with the apostle: “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” My hope is not in my own righteousness; when I’ve tried that, it hasn’t worked so well. My hope is in the righteousness of Christ--that he who IS righteous will be my advocate, my redeemer, my shepherd in the way that leads away from eternal death to eternal life. May He shepherd this congregation, St. Andrew’s, in the direction of Your own choosing. I ask in the name of the Righteous Savior, Amen.
