THIS WEEKEND AT ST. ANDREW’S
Saturday, August 1, 5:00
Sunday, August 2, 8:30 & 10:00
Bruce preaching:
A MAN OF ALMS & PRAYER
Ten things you expect:
An overview of the first nine chapters of Acts.
An in depth study of Acts Chapter 10
A short tour of the dietary laws of Leviticus.
Photographs from the ancient Biblical city of Caesarea.
A look at what Cornelius did right.
The sacrament of Holy Communion offered to all who will receive it.
The Ax Of The Apostles in all three services, playing SOLID ROCK, a cut from Bob Dylan’s great album of Christian conversion: SAVED.
The Bell Choir on Sunday morning.
SHOUT TO THE LORD!
The presence of Jesus Christ, who has promised to be with us when two or more are gathered.
Let’s pray together! And I mean that in the most literal sense. Wherever you are as you read this, say the words aloud if you can; if you’re in a place where that seems inappropriate, for whatever reason, hear the words in your mind…
Lord God, we ask that you would empower St. Andrew’s as we gather this weekend. There will be new people in our midst—there always are. May they experience St. Andrew’s as a place of Christian hospitality and warm-hearted worship. Use our fellowship to communicate the joy of the gospel. In the tradition of Cornelius, may our prayers and alms ascend as a memorial to you. Make us one in love, fellowship and service. I ask in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
See you in church, BRD

I’m writing from home on Tuesday evening. Nancy’s at the monthly meeting of the Staff-Parish Committee. SPRC handles all our personnel work. Last night, I was in a very productive Gracious Generosity/Finance Committee meeting. St. Andrew’s is blessed with wonderful leadership. Anyway, tonight I’ve been working on annotations for 100 ESSENTIAL POP SONGS: 1946-1966. Kay Starr is spinning THE WHEEL OF FORTUNE even as I type. I’m learning all sorts of stuff. Did you know, for instance, that when Zsa Zsa Gabor sang the title song in the 1952 film, MOULIN ROUGE, she was lip-synching the voice of African-American Muriel Smith? This multi-disc CD will be offered to the highest bidder on Friday evening, November 20, The Annual St. Andrew’s Dinner/Dance/Auction. Corey and Shawna Rector will be our hosts. You’ll be hearing much more about all of this, of course, but for now be sure to save the date.

I finally got around to seeing the video shot by MAJOR TODD SCHUG in Baghdad, shared in our worship services on the 4th of July Weekend, while Nancy and I were on vacation. I knew it would be wonderful, and I hope you get an opportunity to see it too. You will be blessed. Todd is back in Georgia, now, reunited with his ?peaches,? as he calls Liza and their daughters??..Several weeks ago, I wrote of a futile attempt to find a Pizza Hut lunch buffet. Thanks to reader suggestions, Nancy and I were at the Pizza Hut on 90th and Fort yesterday. It was a wonderful culinary experience, with fresh salad and a variety of thin-crust pepperoni options??Are there any Jack Reacher fans out there? I think the newest book, GONE TOMORROW, is one of the best in the series. If you?re not familiar with Jack Reacher, he?s the creation of author Lee Child: a contemporary hybrid of John Wayne and the David Carradine character on Kung Fu, a former Military Policeman who travels light, doesn?t say much, but has many adventures. Bad guys/gals beware!?.My summer reading has included a re-visiting of William Faulkner?s Snopes Trilogy. I?ve finished THE HAMLET and am half-way through THE TOWN. I doubt that I?ll try THE MANSION, though; the third book was written in Faulkner?s last days and doesn?t hold together very well. A hundred years ago, my great-grandparents were living in hamlets like Lock Springs, Missouri--little holes in the road not so unlike Faulkner?s Frenchman?s Bend. Then my maternal grandparents moved to the town of the Breckenridge. Faulkner?s fictional Jefferson, Mississippi, always brings images of Breckenridge to mind. I grew up in towns, myself, but like so many in my generation have long since become a city dweller. But smalls towns and hamlets are very much part of my interior DNA and revisiting them through Faulkner always feels like going home to a place that was gone before I got there?.. Seen any movies lately? Nancy and I really liked PUBLIC ENEMIES.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT FROM NANCY DAVIS:
Let?s all do this exercise: At the end of the day, ask yourself, ?Did I take time to dance a little today?? Check yourself every evening and if you can?t think of anything you did on a particular day to dance, promise yourself you?ll do better the next day! Keep dancing!

Please join me in a word of prayer:
Lord God, I thank you for another day of life. I pray for our youth on their way home from their mission tour. Bring them home safe.
I ask you to bless our weekend of our worship. I heard Todd talking this morning about the comfort he found through the chaplaincy ministry in Iraq, and a place of prayer called The Oasis. Todd?s prayer even included America?s enemies, asking that their hearts be softened and there will be peace for all. I pray that St. Andrew?s will be an oasis of spiritual peace for all who come through our doors, particularly into our worship experience.
If there are any families going through their own internal wars, hidden from the rest of us; may husbands and wives and fathers and sons and mothers and daughters find peace through shared faith in you. May the homes of our Saints be places of oasis rather than hostility.
I look forward to being with my friends at St. Andrew?s this weekend. I heard Todd, a long way from home, talk about missing his friends here at St. Andrew?s. Give us grace never to take our friends in the faith for granted. There will be new people coming to the congregation this weekend. I pray we will extend a hand of friendship to them and they will find St. Andrew?s to be an oasis for their journey. And as always, I ask you to provide the resources necessary to do the ministry you have set before us.
I ask all this hopefully in Jesus? name, AMEN

Your editor is a huge believer that there is much to be gained from the study of great Christian lives. William Jennings Bryan, of Lincoln, Nebraska, was one of the most significant Americans of his era. His Christian faith and politics were inseparable. He was front and center in events of a hundred years ago that strike me as having much to teach us in our generations. Caution: If you think you know something about William Jennings Bryan because you once saw INHERIT THE WIND, what you think you know is almost certainly wrong. We’ll sing stirring old hymns of faith, including Onward Christian Soldiers. I am very excited about WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN AND THE CROSS OF GOLD. I hope you’ll make it a priority to be with us—and invite a friend!

Special Guest: Senator Scott Lautenbaugh will read selections from The Great Commoner.
BIG GARDEN DEDICATION THIS SUNDAY. We will celebrate our Big Garden project this Sunday after the 10:00 service with a short dedication service. We will meet out by the garden, which is on the north side of the pre-school area, for a short time of prayer and a recognition of those persons who have worked so hard to make the garden such a beautiful and productive place. We are in the process of giving fresh produce from the garden to the Food Bank so that people who might otherwise not have these vegetables in their diet can benefit from them. This is a terrific project and I hope many of you will want to come and join us this Sunday.

Holy Lord, I thank you for a wonderful weekend of worship at St. Andrew’s. It’s always such a joy to be with our friends in the faith. I thank you for bringing Ben and Erin, James and Allyson into the congregation. I praise you for the little ones who were baptized and ask your grace upon Jenessa and Leila as they grow in the grace and favor of our Lord. We surely have readers who are trying to make a decision about Disciple Bible Study. It’s a big commitment, but I’ve seen so many people blessed by the experience, and I pray you’ll guide those who are trying to decide to make the right decision for them. We’ve got a couple of babies in the hospital right now, and I pray your healing grace on little Dawson Kernan and Christian Dexter. Our Youth Mission Team, our in Colorado, are much on our hearts and I ask your particular presence in their midst. Thank you for your many blessings to St. Andrew’s. Give us grace and power to be the church you would have us to be. Amen.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT FROM NANCY DAVIS:
Let’s all do this exercise: At the end of the day, ask yourself, “Did I take time to dance a little today?” For those of you who were not with us over the weekend, dancing in this context refers to doing something every day to appreciate all of life’s blessings, to notice beauty around us, to spend time having fun, to smile and laugh. Check yourself every evening and if you can’t think of anything you did on a particular day to dance, promise yourself you’ll do better the next day! Keep dancing!

St. Andrew’s Newest Members:
Erin Svoboda and Ben Anderson: Erin is an Interior Designer at Designer’s Touch and Ben is a dispatcher at Union Pacific.
James and Allyson Deahl: James is a Montessori Teacher and Allyson is a make-up artist at MAC Cosmetics. They have two children; Leila- 6 months and Cindy- 6 years.

We were blessed to participate in the baptisms of:
Jenessa Rose Kimminau, daughter of Josh & Kalyn Kimminau
Leila Rose Deahl, daughter of James & Allyson Deahl
It’s astonishing how many baptisms we’re doing these days. Over the past twelve months, we’ve performed 63 baptisms, 42 of those since the first of the year—with three more scheduled this weekend! WONDERFUL!!!

NEBRASKA HERITAGE WEEKEND
A Bruce Davis Chautauqua Lecture:
WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN & THE CROSS OF GOLD

DID YOU KNOW?
The Youth Mission Team is scheduled to leave around 1:45 today (Friday) for a week of ministry in Cortez, Colorado. It appears this will be the largest group ever for a St. Andrew’s Youth Mission Trip….
Team Netta, captained by Mark Roberts, was the top earner in this year’s RELAY FOR LIFE. Many thanks to all the teams and Saints of Andrew who participated in RELAY….
Though the three-year campaign has officially ended, a surprising number of people continue to give to SHARING, GROWING, CHANGING LIVES—your editor among them. We’ll just keep whittling this debt down….
The WILLIE WONKA PERFORMING ARTS CAMP was a HUGE success! They had their big performance yesterday afternoon. Particular kudos to Tracy Bellamy for her leadership.

FAITH FORMATION NEWS FROM DIANA FAUST
August Book Club
Devil In The White City: A Saga of Murder and Mystery at a Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson is the selection for August. Their fates were linked by the magical Chicago World’s Fair of 1893, nicknamed the “White City” for its majestic beauty. Architect Daniel Burnham built it; serial killer Dr. H. H. Holmes used it to lure victims to his World’s Fair Hotel, designed for murder. Both men left behind them a powerful legacy, one of brilliance and energy, the other of sorrow and darkness. Here, then, is your ticket to the greatest fair in history—a place where incredible dreams came to life alongside darkest nightmares. Purchase your own copy of the book and join the Book Club on August 10 at 7 p.m. at the Sorenson’s home.

Prayer Notes: Lauren Hawks, daughter of Brad and Meg, underwent surgery earlier this week….Congratulations to Wayne & Judy Fowler at the birth of grandson Luca Dominic Fowler. Wayne and Judy are currently with little Luca and his parents in Germany.
*
Lord God, I pray today for our youth, as they set out on their mission adventure. May this be a time of personal spiritual growth for each of them. And please, please Lord, bring them back safely.
I pray for St. Andrew’s as we look forward to another week of worship. Perhaps there’s someone out there really struggling right now, who needs to hear a word of hope and encouragement. Please bring them to us, and help us bring you to them and them to you.
Give us grace to be your church and to do your work in interesting times. There’s a lot of stress out there. The economic stresses contribute to marital and family stresses. We want to help. Help us to help. I ask in the name of the living Christ, Amen.

I’ve been looking at the financial report for the first half of the year. After an amazing 2008, the 2009 numbers are a little disappointing, so far. Given the national economy, I suppose that’s nothing to be surprised about, and I give mighty thanks to God that we’re surely in a much better financial position than most non-profit organizations. Maybe you remember the story of Joseph in Genesis. He forecasts seven years of plenty to be followed by seven years of famine, and advises Pharaoh to stock up during the good years in preparation for lean times. Likewise, with the bad economic forecasts looming, we were able to store up some reserves last year that are turning out to be mighty helpful right now.
Some of you have heard this before, but it bears saying again: St. Andrew’s is committed to excellent stewardship. We are very careful with our spending, as a matter of both financial prudence and faithfulness to the call of Christ.
That said, the first couple of weeks in July have been lackluster at best. I suppose we’ll have more exact numbers to share when we mail out the six-month statements in a few weeks, but suffice for now to remind you that the cost of running the ministries at St. Andrew’s do not go down in the summer—in fact, with all the summer ministries to Youth and Children, the expenses actually increase!--and your Gracious Generosity is deeply appreciated! .

God bless you,

Acts 18 has the Apostle Paul sharing the gospel in the city of Corinth. He ran into a lot of discouragement, but received this encouragement from the Lord, “Do not be afraid, but speak and do not be silent; for I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to harm you, for there are many in this city who are my people.” Here’s Paul, feeling isolated and alone, and the Lord encourages him by saying there others in this town who are “my people.” Paul is not alone. Neither are you. In times of discouragement, know there are people of the Lord here at St. Andrew’s who want to befriend and support you. You’ll meet some of them through the studies and fellowship opportunities listed above.

FROM BRUCE DAVIS:GREETINGS FROM WYOMING! This is Bruce Davis writing from Rock Springs, in the southeast corner of the state. Nancy and I have put 3,211 miles on the car since leaving Omaha eleven days ago. The journey has taken us through Sterling, Denver and Grand Junction in Colorado; Moab and Monument Valley in Utah; Flagstaff, Arizona; Hoover Dam and Las Vegas; the Mojave Desert, Solvang, San Jose and the Donner Pass in California; Reno and Elko in Nevada; Salt Lake City and now Wyoming--headed in the direction of home.
Perhaps its been the vastness of the mountains, deserts and spaces inbetween, but I've had powerful reflective experiences on this trip, thinking about the reality of God, and what it means to believe that Jesus is the Son of God and those who believe in him will receive providentail power for living by the Holy Spirit. I'll look forward to sharing some of these thoughts and experienced with you over the coming weeks and months, and I know Nancy will have much to share, as well.
We'll hope to see you this weekend. Nancy, Mandy, Adam and Tyler Scritchfield (without benefit of guitar)will be helping me with a sermon titled ONE MORNING AT THE TEMPLE. I invite you read the 8th chapter of John in preparation for our worship experience.
God bless you, BRD

Our Vacation Bible School mission this year was to donate food for the Omaha Food Bank. We are proud to announce that Crocodile Dock VBS kids raised 428 pounds of non-perishable food for the needy people right here in Omaha.
Mark your calendars to come and enjoy the talents of our actors at the first ST. Andrew’s Performing Arts Camp. They are putting on a kid’s version of Willy Wonka and of course there will be CHOCOLATE there too.

NEWS FROM THE SEIN CHIT FAMILY:
Great news from our refugee family that we sponsored; they have a 16 year old daughter still in Thailand that some of our St. Andrew’s members discovered. They have applied for her to come to the United States and she got approved. It will be a year or so until she will be allowed to come here- but this is great news! Thanks, again to all who helped with this family. St. Andrew’s will continue to help refugee families and there are ways you can help. First is an upcoming event/fundraiser on August 1st to raise money for refugee replacement; more information at lfsneb.org. Second, the months of August & September are busy months for refugee replacements. We will be sponsoring another family and if you’d like to be on the team to organize this contact Mandy Barkhaus mbarkhaus@standrewsomaha.net

What a great weekend this was at St. Andrew’s! The message from Major Todd Schug who is stationed in Iraq was inspirational. Adam Witte, who led the service, did an outstanding job with a message about God loving all nations and praying for those who want to destroy peace. You can find the mp3s for both messages by clicking below or on the St. Andrew’s website under Worship→ Sermons-Audio.
I’ve been told my A-mails are a bit shorter than Bruce’s- maybe today’s will make up for that!

FROM ADAM WITTE:
First, a big thank-you to everyone who attended worship this weekend! After spending the better part of six weeks trying to get just one ‘sermon’ ready, my respect for Bruce and Nancy and their abilities to do it week after week has grown exponentially.
Second, we are in dire need of volunteers to serve Communion. The Lord’s Supper is usually served the first weekend of every month; the next weekend will be August 1-2. No experience is necessary—all you need to do is show up and you can be trained in about three minutes. If you are interested in being a part of this ministry, please contact me at awitte@standrewsomaha.net or 431-8560 ext. 18. Please include which service(s) you regularly attend.
Finally, and on a personal note, it was a tremendous honor to share worship with every one of you who set aside the time for it during the holiday weekend. Thanks go to Bruce and Nancy for allowing me to get my feet wet, and to all of you for your patience with me. Have you said your two little prayers yet? J

From Youth Director Bob Davis:
This past weekend we started our Youth Mission Trip Stock Invitation campaign. Our senior high youth and adult chaperones (57 in all) will be traveling to Cortez, Colorado July 17-25. So many wonderful things come as a result of taking this mission trip. Our kids get the opportunity to help repair homes, teach vacation Bible study to children, and to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ though action. The kids have reported to me that our senior high mission trips are one of the best parts of their entire summer!
You will find an Orange Youth Mission trip Stock Invitation insert in the church bulletins for the next couple of weeks for your review. Tis the season for vacations! I just got back from a great vacation with my family! We had a wonderful trip and were amazed at all the beautiful things God has made. Bruce and Nancy are off now on vacation and that leaves me to be the official A-mail editor.
Since we were on vacation, we missed what sounds like a great performance from the Ax of the Apostles at the Rock & Roll show. I heard Bill Wert did amazing on the drums and the whole show was great. The best part was, we raised $1544 for “Angels Among Us”. “Angels Among Us” is a group that supports children with cancer and their families. St. Andrew’s is a great place.

I told Nancy yesterday, I wanted to go to Wahoo for a Pizza Hut Buffet. I am yet to find a Pizza Hut in our vicinity that offers a lunch buffet, but understand there is one in Wahoo. I mis-remembered the route and we wound up in Fremont, instead. Gee, there are a lot of Lutheran churches in Fremont! Anyway, we found a Pizza Hut in Fremont and in fact they had a buffet, but it was a disaster. The place was understaffed, there were no plates out, virtually no pizza on the buffet. We gave up and walked over to Godfather’s—and the Fremont Godfather’s was ready for business. They were well-staffed, there was plenty of food out--including Swedish meatballs that I’m sure are popular with all those Lutherans. Pizza Hut makes a great pizza, particularly their thin crust pepperoni, but who wants to go someplace that isn’t ready to receive you? It’s that way in the church, of course. When people come to St. Andrew’s, we want them to experience heaping helpings of the Gospel, prepared according to our recipe of Live, Laugh, Love God, served in an atmosphere of Radical Hospitality! Remember, Dear Reader, you’re part of the welcoming committee!

RON & KATHY OLSON write: The Harvest Riders, of the Christian Motorcycle Association from Abundant Life mission in downtown Omaha, are seeking help to clothe the folks they're trying to help. They urgently need men's clothing, underwear & socks (small to medium sizes-they're gaunt) as well as women's and children's clothing & underwear...all sizes. St. Andrew's Hope Circle is placing a collection container in the rotunda in which you may place your contributions. Your help will be greatly appreciated by the people who have fallen through the cracks of society.

PSALM 27:1-3, The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh—my adversaries and foes—they shall stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, I will be confident.
