LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE GOD

THIS WEEKEND
Saturday, September 12, 5:00
Sunday, September 13: 8:30 & 10:00
Bruce Davis, Adam Witte, The Ax Of The Apostles, The Horns of Jericho and The Let It Be Singers present:
ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE: THE EXTENDED PLAY VERSION.

Those who have been studying 1 Corinthians in our Reading The Bible Through The Year Project surely noticed Paul’s teaching that different people have different gifts. My own gifts package includes something kind of quirky:
I can read a piece of scripture and fit it to a rock and roll tune. We originally did ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE at Easter, telling the events of Holy Week through Beatles’ tunes, including the title song, Here Comes The Sun, Hey Jude, Helter Skelter, Let It Be, and a half dozen others. Even before that was finished working that up, I realized I wanted to do more with it. The Extended Play Version, offered this weekend, starts at the 1st chapter of John, 1st verse, set to Across the Universe:

In the beginning was the Word
The Word with God, The Word was God
God spoke the Word; the worlds were made
He made the Universe.

We move from there to Jesus’ baptism and the call of the first disciples, set to
I Saw Her Standing There. The Sons of Zebedee sing of the Something they have found in this Jesus. The Sermon on the Mount is in the meter of From Me To You. Oh-Bla-Di, Oh-Bla-Da has the little children coming to Jesus. Our offertory is Can’t Buy Me Love--the apostles sharing Jesus’ teaching on financial stewardship. The Lazarus sage is told in the context of Eleanor Rigby. Then we move to Holy Week, which is largely unchanged from what we did at Easter. After the resurrection, we hear Doubting Thomas telling his story through I Want To Hold Your Hand. (Take out the word hold, substitute holes, and there are all sorts of lyrical possibilities.) We tell the ascension story through Lucy In The Sky.

This is the sort of thing you either do right or you don’t do it at all. Praise God, I am surrounded by people with incredible music gifts—and we can do it right! This would be a wonderful occasion to invite people to attend worship at St. Andrew’s. Perhaps you’ll consider posting an invitation on Facebook or Twitter, or forwarding this A-Mail. Of course, I hope you’ll make it a point to be with us, yourself. This is a great way to tell the old, old story and I trust hearts will be warmed.

Since I last wrote, I’ve been to Bordeaux, France, and back. Granddaughter Madeline turned two last month. Watching her negotiate bilingualism is fascinating. A couple of examples: Maddy uses day’-sond (French for descend) when she wants to get down. In contrast, when she’s finished with something, she goes into English: All done. I learn a few new French words with each visit. Bee’-zoo means kiss, and Madeline has lots of bee’-zoos for gra-pa-pa.

Adult Coed Volleyball Starts September 23
The adult coed volleyball program is starting up for the fall season. We’ll play Sunday evenings from September 23 to March 21, 2010, with no sessions between Thanksgiving and January 1. We have reserved the time slot of 7-9 pm in the Family Life Center but will run either 7-8:30 or 7:30-9:00 depending on the wishes of the group. This is a great chance to get a little exercise and meet some new St. Andrews people. You don’t have to be good, just interested in playing! There are no set teams, whoever shows up that week plays. If you know of others who might be interested, invite them to come with you. And the best part is that it is FREE! Questions? Contact Alan Brugler at 402-697-0657 or 402-415-3871.

From SHIRLEY KATHKA
Sept. 20th marks the 50th Annual Camp Fontanelle BBQ. This is a great family event, and a fund-raiser for the camp. Plan to spend the day enjoying the hiking trails, BBQ dinner, entertainment, laser tag, corn maze, animals at the barn, quilt auction, worship, and much much more. Camp Fontanelle is just a short, pretty drive from Omaha. Go to campfontanelle.com for the complete schedule and directions. Hope to see you there - don't forget to wear your camp t-shirt if you have one!
*MICHELLE PETERSON writes: Patience Circle will be having their annual cookie dough sales starting this week. We will sale the cookie dough for two weeks starting Saturday, September 12, 2009 and ending Sunday, September 20, 2009. We will then deliver the cookie dough at church after the services during the weekend of September 26, 2009. The money raised helps our group support Embrace the Teachers, as well as the different groups that St. Andrews supports. We appreciate the congregation’s support! PS The cookie dough will be in before the Harvest Boutique!
