This is a big weekend in the life of the congregation, kicking off a new season in the church school. As Nancy said last weekend, many of us grew up calling this PROMOTION SUNDAY: the kiddies are promoted/step up to their new classes. Let’s be clear about something. We have a lot of things—GREAT THINGS—going on in the St. Andrew’s Children’s Ministry, including Upward Basketball, Vacation Bible School, a host of special events sprinkled throughout the year. But the backbone of our Children’s Ministry is the weekly Church School program. These other things are intended, not as substitutes for the children’s Church School, but as supplements. The Church School hour is the front-line of our teaching ministry to the little ones. At the same time, we are teaching the children the holy habit of Sabbath observance. At the risk of falling into cliché, at St. Andrew’s we really do believe it takes a village (in our case, a congregation) to raise the little ones in the way of the Lord. It takes adult volunteers. It takes caring parents. It takes the financial support of every person reading this mailing. Let’s be clear on this, too: We’re talking about forming the faith and character of these children. Please, please, please do not look at this as just another activity your children are involved in, to be supported by your dues or activity fee or whatever. THIS IS MINISTRY IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST TOWARD THE END OF TEACHING OF YOUR CHILD THE WAY THAT LEADS TO LIFE ABUNDANT AND ETERNAL—and not only your child, but all the children who come here. I believe what we’re doing here is of ultimate importance. I hope you do, too.

It’s little wonder that children are on my mind today. Two years ago today, August 19, 2007, was a Sunday. I went into worship that morning knowing my daughter Mary was in labor. I came out of the 10:00 service to see a flashing light on my telephone, and a message from my son-in-law that MADELINE TEISSIER du CROS had been born! I don’t see how people can look at a little child and believe their existence is somehow a random cosmic accident. I don’t pretend to understand all the whys and wherefores of creation, but I firmly believe it is the handiwork of the Creator. Specifically, I believe it’s the handiwork the Creator made known to us in the person of Jesus Christ, who said, “Let the children come to me, for to them belongs the kingdom of God!”

Loving God, we bring to you these needs. We know that we are all in need of your special healing touch but we also know that there are times when the difficulties of life make us feel that need even more strongly. These persons are experiencing that kind of need now. We rejoice to know that you are with them and their families through your loving Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen
