The Biggest Loser Contest
Are you are a Big Loser? Would you like to be? The Biggest Loser for Jesus contest kicks off February 20th and 21st at St Andrews. You can participate in two ways. First you can be a Big Loser yourself (ADULTS ONLY). You simply sign up with Bob Davis by leaving your name, phone number and email address. You weigh in on your own scale sometime the weekend of February 20th and 21st, turn in the weight to Bob by email. You weigh in every week and submit that weight to Bob. Bob is the only person that will see your weight throughout the entire 13 week event. The event is really more of collaboration than a contest. The only thing that will be tracked every week is the total weight loss of the group and the total dollars raised. Here are some of the benefits of being a Biggest Loser:
1) Peer pressure and support to succeed.
2) Healthy eating and exercise suggestions by our health ministry team.
3) An accountability buddy, someone who will help you stay on track with your life style change and you will serve the same role for him/her.
4) Cool Biggest Loser T shirt.
5) Last and certainly not least, the motivation that comes from knowing that every dollar raised will go towards the youth group mission trip where they will truly spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The cost to be a Biggest Loser is only a $20 donation to the youth group. Weight watchers charges nearly $40 per month.
Now maybe you are not someone who needs to lose weight, how can you participate? Easy, just pledge to sponsor a Biggest Loser. You can pledge to sponsor an individual or pledge to sponsor the whole team. The whole pledge per pound has you confused, then feel free to pledge a flat dollar amount. Your pledge will inspire and motivate the Biggest Loser participants and 100% of all funds raised will go to the youth group mission trip. So be a Big Loser, a Big Loser for Jesus.

Message from Claire Herzog (Lutheran Family Refugee Services)
Hello friends, I think most of you have already heard about the layoffs at Tyson Council Bluffs and I wanted to send an e-mail specifically to you about the family you have sponsored over the last couple years. Unfortunately, the layoffs include, Sein Chit. His last day will be March 22. We will be doing the best we can to help them, but it will certainly be difficult given the numbers. 480 are being laid off and our best estimates are that at least 300 are refugees. Tyson and other Iowa agencies are also scrambling to put together job fairs and other assistance for the employees. I never know who might have connections to another job! Of course, their options are still limited given their English ability, but it is worth putting the idea out there. In addition, if any of the members feel it in their heart to give to these families if March 22 comes around and they still haven’t found a new job, I would be more than happy to facilitate that. Even just visits to let them know of the emotional support would be great, as we’ve noticed that many of the families are feeling that their path to the American dream has taken a serious detour. cherzog@lfsneb.org

It was a great weekend at St. Andrew’s. Nancy’s sermon was encouraging, the presence of the Boy Scouts was really neat, the bells sounded heavenly and the pancakes were delicious. Bruce will be back this week from his trip to France and I am sure he will be gearing up for the sermon this weekend, THE POWER OF TWO. I am looking forward to hearing Nancy and Bruce sing their duet! As the temperature drops, I am thankful for my warm house and pray for those who may be suffering from the cold. Have a safe and warm week.

CRAIG LEFLER writes: I wanted to thank you for spotlighting the
Siena/Francis House throughout February. Further, a huge thank you goes out to the congregation of St. Andrew's for their on-going support. Over the past year, I have been blessed to serve on the executive board of the shelter. As you can imagine, these difficult economic times have amplified the need for a place and service provided by the Siena/Francis House. A couple statistics, in 2008, the shelter averaged 347 night guests. Last week, the average was over 450 with a high of 493 (78 women and children). The shelter has a 341 bed capacity. In addition, Siena/Francis provided over 375,000 meals in 2009.

SEINA/FRANCIS HOUSE IS OUR MISSION OF THE MONTH. Stop by the information table in the Rotunda this weekend for ways you can participate in this ministry. This weekend’s communion offering will go to support our ministry to Siena/Francis.

HEALTH KITS FOR HAITI, Betty Bramer
A big THANK YOU to everyone who donated of their time and money for the Health Kits for Haiti effort. You donated a whopping $3,449.50. We were able to round up supplies for 240 kits (the kits that were short have now been completed) at a cost of $1394.39 for those supplies. We have to pay $1 each for 240 toothpaste tubes ($240) and $1 each for overall shipping and handling of each kit (another $240). That leaves us with $1,575.11. This will be sent to UMCOR in a separate check for additional relief needs in Haiti. Again THANK YOU church family for your donations, your work at helping to set up, working to put the kits together and working to do the clean up. It was an awesome morning.

MISSION OF THE MONTH
February: Siena/Francis House
Siena/Francis House is a homeless shelter in downtown Omaha for men, women and children. They offer food, shelter, clothing and medical attention to those in need. Counseling and support is also available for addictions, education and legal issues. Siena/Francis provides over 1,000 meals per day. St. Andrews provides 250 sack lunches a month to Siena/Francis House. The food is donated by generous people at St. Andrews and a group gets together the 4th Tuesday of each month to assemble and deliver the lunches. Last year, Siena/Francis served over 326,000 meals, without church and community donations this would not be possible. St. Andrew’s will be making a donation to Siena/Francis this month and our communion offering this weekend will go to support our ministry to Siena/Francis. Be looking for a table in the Rotunda with information about how you can participate in this ministry.

Let’s close with the entirety of Reinhold Niebuhr’s Serenity Prayer.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next.

A line from ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS: We are treading where saints have trod. I love to tell the story of heroes of the faith, and have a special place in my heart for American preachers in what’s remembered as The Time Between The Wars. Reinhold Niebuhr began his public ministry about the time World War 1 was starting. He was a leading Christian figure of what’s remembered as The Progressive Era. To give you an idea of Niebuhr’s brand of activism: He started his ministry at a German-speaking congregation in Detroit, preaching Prohibition to a constituency that loved their beer, then turned his focus on Henry Ford. Niebuhr got into politics, ran as a member of the Socialist Party, then experienced a major change of course as war clouds gathered yet again over Europe. As we will see this weekend, his thinking is still very much informing contemporary conversation about the ethics of war. I look forward to sharing ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS: The Reinhold Niebuhr Story with you

St. Andrew’s worships at 5:00 on Saturday evening and 8:30 & 10:00 on Sunday morning.

Finally, there will be posters available at the ticket table. Please take one and place it somewhere within our community to advertise the event!

Volunteers needed for concert! – PLEASE READ! We are also in need of about twelve volunteers to help with the unloading of the tour’s equipment (called Load-in) and loading of their equipment after the show (called Load-out). We need volunteers 18 years of age and older who can lift 50 pounds. Load-in will most likely begin between 10am and noon on the 27th. The Load-out will occur after the concert is over (around 9:30pm). We will also be asking those helping with Load-out to also help in bringing the choir risers back into the sanctuary and setting them up. NOW, that sounds like a lot of work, but THE MORE VOLUNTEERS WE HAVE the easier and faster the work will be! TO THE CONGREGATION OF ST. ANDREWS,
I would like to express my gratitude for your support during 2009. We had many challenges during the year, the greatest being in greatly increased number of people needing help. Thanks to you we were able to help over 6,200 people with food and other needs. For the first time we are able to start a new year with our pantry nearly full.
MAY GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU!
Gratefully,
Barbara Gresham
Director Pearl United Methodist Food Pantry
*
2009 OVERVIEW OF PEARL UNITED METHODIST FOOD PANTRY
During 2009 the Pearl United Methodist Food Pantry served a total of 6,202 persons with food and other necessities. This is a tremendous increase from the around 1,800 persons served during 2008. The amazing thing is all this took place in a space about the size of the Sunday school room we meet in.
Throughout the year there was a steady stream of people asking for assistance who had never visited a food pantry or service agency before. As a matter of fact some had contributed to the food pantry in the past. The number of persons seeking help is expected to increase during the next year as well. Unlike other service agencies the Pearl United Methodist Food Pantry does not receive funding from outside sources. The funding comes from a grant from United Methodist Ministries, with additional help coming from donations from area United Methodist Churches. The grant helps with the salary for Barb Gresham as well as providing money she can take to the food bank and purchase food for .17 cents a pound. The $400 St. Andrews sends every month-if my math is correct-will provide 2,352 pounds of food per month.

We’re happy to report note that DARLENE SHERMAN is home and recovering from surgery. The news all seems to be encouraging and we’re thankful for that.

And we are saddened to learn that TED LARSON, brother of MARSHA EUREK has passed away. Ted was a good guy.
*
Let’s pray: Holy God, bless your people as we prepare for another weekend of worship. Some will be here tomorrow, during the day, with Upward Basketball and Health Kits For Haiti. Tomorrow evening and all day Sunday will be spent in various assemblies of worship, study and fellowship. To any who may wondering about their own participation, I share this line from the hymn we’ll be singing: Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng, blend with ours your voices in the triumph song! I say this in the name of your son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

During Lent 2010, we will be studying the book 24 Hours That Changed the World. This study will help you better understand the events that occurred during the last 24 hours of Jesus’ life, see more clearly the theological significance of Christ’s suffering and death, and reflect upon the meaning of these events for your life. Whether you are a longtime Christian or simply curious about the story of Christ’s crucifixion, you are invited to join us on this inspiring journey. Stop by the table in the Rotunda and sign up for one of the small groups that will begin meeting the week of Feb. 14. Or, contact Diana at dfaust@standrewsomaha.net.

February Book Club
The St. Andrew’s Book Club will gather on February 8 at 7 p.m. at Becky Bryan’s home. Read Conagher by Louis L’Amour and join the group. PASTOR STEVE SMITH writes from Plainview, Missouri: A member of mine who had pancreatic cancer (she has since passed) went to Saint Andrews with her partner while in Omaha on medical visits. Her partner Tim has told me he found it to be a moving experience and the people to be welcoming and warm. He has had issues with his faith and Saint Andrew’s helped carry him through this. We never know who's life we touch with just a welcome and a handshake"

We’re coming off an outstanding weekend at St. Andrew’s. It’s no trivial thing that TRIVIA NIGHT participation was up substantially. Such things are nice barometers. We were blessed to receive a group of great new members. 1985 was well received. (If you missed it, the manuscript is posted on the web site.) As I was putting the slides together, with lots of pictures from the mid-80s, it was interesting to think that St. Andrew’s didn’t exist when these photographs were taken. Pam Fleury with her big hair, Steve Groves with hair down to his shoulders, Richard and Susan Harrison cutting their wedding cake, little Mandy opening her Christmas presents, Easy Riders Doug and Jean Wilcox, new dad Jim Woodland, Nathan Meisgeier in his braces, Nancy Schafer graduating from seminary—none of these had any idea their lives would converge at a congregation yet to be born. And yet here we are, and look what God is doing in and through us! I am so pleased to be part of this. And I’m pleased you’re part of it, too.

Trivia Night contributed to a larger-than-usual Saturday evening worship attendance. We launched the Saturday evening service two years ago this spring. It took some getting-used-to on my part. I had a tough time with my biorhythms. About a year ago, I decided I’d try to replicate my Sunday morning routine. So these days, I get in an early Saturday afternoon nap; then go out for a snack, usually a hot apple at Burger King with a cup of coffee--and I’m good-to-go at 5:00 on Saturday. If you have NOT attended our Saturday evening service, I invite you to give it a try. Attendance is usually around 150, with a very laid-back feel to the experience.

In closing today, let’s look at a humn that borrows on Biblical imagery from the Old Testament book of Micah:

What does the Lord require for praise and offering?
What sacrifice, desire, or tribute bid you bring?
Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God.
Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God.

There are a couple of deaths we want to note. One of the saintliest Saints of Andrew has passed away. ALICE KRUSE was 102 years old. She was life-long educator and staunch United Methodist. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 24, 2:30 PM at Crowell Memorial Home in Blair.

And United Methodists are mourning the passing of missionary personnel in Haiti, including REV. SAM DIXON, director of the United Methodist Committee On Relief. Also killed was the Rev. Clint Rabb. Dixon and Rabb were part of a delegation of Methodists visiting Port-Au-Prince when the quake hit. As we’ve said before, your contributions to St. Andrew’s help underwrite UMCOR, one of the most respected relief agencies in the world. If your to donate to the Haiti Relief effort, we have link to UMCOR on the web site: www.standrewsomaha.net.

On a related subject, sort of, I wrote last week that some of us are going to Nicaragua in May. That was a typo. We’re going in MARCH—circa the weekend of the 11th-14th. (No, nobody proofreads these things.) For those new to the congregation, I should explain that St. Andrew’s is involved in a ministry in rural Nicaragua through what’s known as the Rainbow Network. If you are interested in making the trip, please let me know.

And Sandi Cook writes: My brother, Kurt Davey, who is a doctor, is joining a group of Creighton doctors who are leaving Saturday (1/16) for the Dominican Republic. They Dominican Republic is located on the same island as Haiti and these doctors will provide medical aid to the victims of the earthquake. They will be stationed about 30 miles from Port-au-Prince. In your A-mail prayer matters would you please include my brother and all of the caregivers who are headed to the area to provide assistance?
And finally, in the realm of service, Bob Davis and some of the youth are spending this MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. observance in downtown Omaha, in service to others. We’re proud of them.

Lord God, In the midst of tribulation, stand by your people. I thank you for the lives of those who have lived and died in faith. This day, I am particularly mindful of Alice Kruse, Sam Dixon and Clint Rabb. I ask you to be with all who are putting themselves in harm’s way in Haiti, for the sake of others. They deserve our love, prayers and respect. I say this in the name of him who died so that we may live. Amen.
